Why i do, what i do
my story
I believe it is important for people to know the background of a therapist in whom they will be trusting their innermost thoughts and feelings. My commitment is to work with potential clients so that they can find the right therapy or consultation fit for themselves.
I have been a licensed psychologist in practice for over 30 years. I am passionate about providing intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy, brief therapy approaches, and consultations with other mental health professionals. Please see the pages dedicated to these areas on my website.
My career has included providing psychoanalytic and person-centered psychotherapies; conducting psychological evaluations for schools, private individuals, and Florida courts; university teaching; and research in applied psychology. I have provided clinical services and consultations in in mental health agencies, hospitals, school settings, Head Start programs, and a college counseling center.
While most of my career has been dedicated to providing clinical services, I took a nearly 10-year journey into the psychology research world to learn all I could about how humans think, behave, make decisions, and operate under stress in complex environments. During that time, I was honored to work alongside some of the brightest minds in applied experimental psychology and human factors research at the University of Central Florida, Lockheed Martin, and the U.S. Army Research Institute in Orlando, Florida.
But my greater passion for psychoanalytic understanding called again. I returned to private practice in 2012 providing psychoanalytic psychotherapy, as well as forensic evaluations for administrative proceedings and criminal courts. I started my private practice, Florida Psychological Consultants, LLC, in 2016, and in-depth training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy in 2020. My practice focuses on intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy, brief therapy approaches, and consultations with other mental health professionals.
With my unique combination of areas of expertise, I can offer clinical interventions to individuals who are seeking psychotherapy. I also offer practice and technology management consultations to licensed mental health professionals and psychology and psychotherapy-focused businesses.
Like many professional and creative types, I have both a breadth and a depth of expertise and training in my field. I believe that investment in training, in therapy, and in our own consultations helps mental health professionals to “tune our instrument.” Our instrument is our understanding of ourselves as complex, vulnerable, but always evolving humans who are in various states of being and becoming.
I believe the study of psychology and human development is a life-long commitment. Thus, I am a life-long learner.
I encourage all who work with me to be life-long learners, to remain curious about themselves and the world around them.
I have been passionate since I was teen with striving to understand others, how we all think and act that is both alike and different but that makes us all human beings. I have a fascination with these and other “big whys” in life. I appreciate the complexities of being human, and I am still learning to embrace contradictions and unknowns.
While I can be quite organized, methodical, and logical, what really captures my curiosity and soul is helping people to understand and embrace their natural intuitions, gifts, and capacities to connect with others.
Although my professional life has been winding and fascinating, I am a psychotherapist at heart. I believe that we are never too old to take new journeys in life, to get to know ourselves and others better, and to learn new ways of being and relating.
